December 2021 issue CFP

We are excited to announce the CFP for the December 2021 issue of Waves: an Undergraduate Journal—a space for researched, creative, and digital works that explore humanistic questions. Waves recognizes the unique perspectives of undergraduate students. Featuring a variety of disciplines, modes, and voices, we promote new waves of student writing that model innovative approaches to complex issues. To be considered for the December 2021 issue, please submit your manuscript and accompanying writer’s memo by Monday, October 25.

Housed at the University of Florida, Waves understands how shifting tides can affect communities—from coastal erosion and algal blooms to political movements and pandemics. Our name reflects our interest in momentum, change, friction, and force. We are also excited to showcase new currents of critical work that flow beyond the confines of the traditional page.

Call for Papers

For the December 2021 issue of Waves, we invite academic, creative, and public-facing work by undergraduate students. All submissions should have a humanistic dimension: What does your project teach us about language, identity, or cultural values? Who is impacted? Whose voice needs to be heard? How do we look to the past to make a better future? What can individuals do to rebuild the systems around us? How can we innovate to address social problems and possibilities?

Whether your project deals with environmental justice, Japanese cinema, Afrofuturism, or the pathogenesis of a viral infection, we hope to showcase undergraduate projects across disciplines. Research-focused work may either be from a single discipline or interdisciplinary, and any work, whether it is creative or researched, can be in one medium or multimodal. Waves also encourages work that centers on community involvement, service-learning, and public engagement.

Waves accepts undergraduate work in a variety of genres, including:

  • Humanities research articles

  • Science and social science research articles

  • Reviews (systematic reviews, meta-analyses, medical reviews)

  • Public-facing and/or community-engaged projects

  • Digital projects (video or photo essays, podcasts, archival projects)

  • Creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry

  • Photography, visual art, graphic design, computer-aided design

  • Games or code experiments

  • Apps or programs

  • Reviews of longer works
